Firefighters are continuing to battle wildfires across Greece, including on the islands, as the fires are fed by gale-force winds.
Images show firefighters near the village of Agia Paraskevi on 2 August 2026, with smoke billowing from a wildfire near the village of Asomatos on the island of Crete, and a man moving away from a fire in the town of Plomari, Lesbos.
Satellite Imagery Shows Devastation
Satellite imagery shows an area near Porto Germeno, 43 miles north-west of Athens, on 27 July, and the same area on 2 August after it was affected by a wildfire. A wildfire was also approaching Krio Pigadi near Porto Germeno, with firefighters at work and a helicopter dropping water over a smoke-filled forest.
Volunteers and Firefighters Respond
A volunteer tried to extinguish small flames, and firefighters battled a wildfire near Agia Paraskevi. The wreckage of a firefighting helicopter lies on a road after two helicopters collided while battling a large wildfire near Psatha, killing two crew members.
Huge flames engulfed an area near Agia Paraskevi, and two firefighters worked to contain a blaze near Porto Germeno. A burned-out settlement in Veniza, near Megara, and an olive tree burning in the Megara valley were also captured.
Ongoing Efforts
Smoke rises from a wildfire in Krio Pigadi, and volunteers battled a wildfire near the village of Preveli in the Rethymno region. People used olive branches to extinguish flames.
