Gardeners Urged to Check One Thing Before Strimming to Protect Hedgehogs
Gardeners Warned: Check for Hedgehogs Before Strimming

Gardeners who are eager to tidy up their outdoor spaces this summer have been urged to exercise caution with one common task that poses a serious risk to hedgehogs. Despite recent spells of rain and cold weather, summer is approaching, with temperatures expected to reach 28 degrees Celsius in parts of the UK this weekend.

Why Hedgehogs Matter

According to the RSPCA, hedgehogs are an important part of the ecosystem and are often described as a gardener's friend because they feed on beetles, caterpillars, worms, and other invertebrates that can harm plants. However, common gardening activities such as strimming and mowing can cause severe injuries or even death to these small mammals.

Essential Checks Before Strimming

The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) advises gardeners to always check the entire area carefully before using a strimmer. Long grass should be cut with care, as strimmers are one of the leading causes of fatal or debilitating hedgehog accidents. Even if hedgehogs have not been spotted in the garden, a thorough check is necessary because long grass can also harbor other creatures like amphibians and small mammals.

For owners of robotic mowers, the RHS recommends checking with the manufacturer about safety features designed to prevent injuries to hedgehogs and other wildlife.

Other Garden Hazards

Hedgehogs often rest in compost heaps, so gardeners should check these carefully before turning or forking the compost. Leaving grass slightly longer can benefit hedgehogs and other wildlife by creating habitat for ground-nesting insects and providing shelter. Longer grass also retains moisture better, and weeds like dandelions offer a food source for emerging insects in spring.

The RSPB adds that avoiding strimmers and delaying mowing until late summer can mimic traditional hay meadows and protect hedgehogs, frogs, and insect larvae.
