Foreign Office Warning for Italy and Malta Travelers This Summer
Foreign Office Warning for Italy and Malta Travelers

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has issued a warning for anyone travelling to Italy and Malta this summer, highlighting the risks of drowning in the sea, lakes, and swimming pools. The alert comes as schools prepare to break up for the six-week holidays, with many British families heading abroad.

Italy: A Popular Summer Destination

Italy remains a top choice for millions of British tourists each year, offering attractions from the Amalfi Coast to the historic streets of Rome. However, the FCDO warns that every year, people drown in the country's waters. The advice emphasises constant supervision of children, keeping small children within arms-reach in and around swimming pools, even if they can swim or a lifeguard is present.

Sea Swimming Risks

Regarding sea swimming, the FCDO advises caution due to strong undercurrents, hidden rocks, and shallow depths that can cause serious injury or death. Holidaymakers are urged not to dive into unknown water and to avoid swimming where a river runs into the sea. The warning also explains the flag system used on many beaches: a red flag means entry into the water is prohibited. If no lifeguards, flags, or signs are present, extra care and local knowledge are recommended. Additionally, walkers on unmonitored beaches should be aware that waves can come in further than expected with strong undertows.

Lake Swimming and Cold Water Shock

The FCDO also highlights dangers in lakes, advising travellers to test the water temperature before swimming. Cold water shock can be extremely dangerous and overwhelm even the strongest swimmers. The Met Office provides tips on staying safe in such conditions.

Malta: Similar Advice Issued

Malta, known for its guaranteed warm weather and stunning beaches including the Blue Lagoon in Comino, receives the same safety advice from the Foreign Office. The warning applies to all water activities, with an emphasis on supervising children and understanding local hazards.

The FCDO's guidance aims to help holidaymakers make informed decisions and avoid tragedies during their summer getaways.
