England and Wales have experienced their driest July since records began in 1836, according to provisional Met Office statistics. Southern England also saw its driest month ever recorded.
The extreme weather has led to multiple heatwaves, with the whole of Wales and half of England now officially in drought. Nineteen counties in England recorded virtually no rainfall – 1mm or less – throughout the entire month.
Record Heat and Sunshine
Southern England had its hottest July on record, while Wales experienced its joint-hottest July. The UK and England as a whole saw their second-hottest July.
The month was also exceptionally sunny, with the UK, England, and Wales all recording their sunniest July on record. For England and Wales, it was the sunniest calendar month ever observed.
