A large fire has broken out at Barr Beacon nature reserve in Great Barr, Walsall, with eight fire engines sent to tackle the blaze. Police officers were blocking three entrances to the reserve as smoke billowed into the sky.
West Midlands Fire Service said: "We have eight crews in attendance at Barr Beacon, Great Barr, where they've responded to a large grassland fire. Please avoid the area where possible."
Beacon Road was closed in both directions between B4151 Beacon Hill and Bridle Lane. Barr Beacon is described as "one of the highest points in the West Midlands", offering "spectacular views" over Birmingham.
Further fires at Perry Hall Playing Fields and Kingfisher Park
The fire service also confirmed crews were at Perry Avenue after a blaze broke out at Perry Hall Playing Fields. Six crews were sent to the scene, and people were asked to avoid the area. Families were present when the fire began around 1pm as the European Cycle Speedway 2026 tournament was being held there. Drone footage showed a huge section of grass completely burnt as flames spread quickly through a large meadow.
A third fire was burning at Kingfisher Park in Hay Mills, east Birmingham, with large plumes of smoke and fierce flames visible. It started around 4pm.
Drought conditions across England and Wales
Many outdoor fires have broken out in the UK in recent weeks as the country experiences extended periods of scorching temperatures and low precipitation. Seven regions in England - half of the country - were placed in drought earlier this week by the Government, including London, East Anglia, Hertfordshire and the West Midlands. The whole of Wales is also in drought.
