A sleep expert has revealed the 'best' sleeping positions to stay cool during the hot nights ahead. Dr Allie Hare, a sleep consultant, suggests that spreading out like a starfish can help Brits cope with the humid conditions expected across the UK.
Starfish Position for Better Air Circulation
Dr Hare explains that overheating during sleep can significantly reduce sleep quality and duration, particularly affecting deep sleep. She says: 'Sleeping in a starfish position may help increase air circulation around your body, aiding a restful night's sleep.'
Side Sleeping as an Alternative
If sharing a bed, the starfish position may not be possible. In that case, side sleeping is recommended. Dr Hare notes that sleeping on your side 'will increase the heat released from your back, helping you feel cooler.'
Importance of Hydration
Dr Hare emphasizes that hydration plays a massive role in body temperature regulation. She advises drinking enough water during the day to help manage excess heat at night, while avoiding large amounts right before bed to prevent sleep disruption.
Additional Tips for Cooler Sleep
- Lukewarm shower: A shower an hour before bed helps the body's natural cooling process by dilating blood vessels in the skin.
- Frozen socks: Lightly soak a pair of socks, freeze them for 10 minutes, then wear them to bed. Dr Hare says feet are heat regulators, so this helps the body feel cooler.
- Breathable bedding: Swap synthetic bedding for cotton or bamboo alternatives to improve airflow and reduce stuffiness.
Overnight temperatures across the UK range from 12°C to 19°C, but the southeast may feel muggy, occasionally reaching 20°C. These tips can help ensure a restful night's sleep despite the heat.
