13M UK Households Urged to Drink Orange Juice for Hay Fever

Hay fever sufferers across the UK are being encouraged to drink orange juice this Saturday as pollen levels are expected to reach very high levels. The Met Office has forecast 'very high' pollen counts for most of England over the weekend, ahead of a 34C heatwave expected next week.

Millions Affected by Hay Fever

Nearly 13 million people in England suffer from hay fever, representing almost one in four adults and one in ten children. The numbers continue to rise each year. This common allergy can cause uncomfortable symptoms such as sneezing, coughing, and itchy eyes. While medication can provide relief, public health nutritionist Dr. Frankie Philips has revealed that some affordable kitchen staples may also help reduce symptoms.

Orange Juice as a Natural Anti-Inflammatory

Dr. Philips highlighted 100% orange juice as a beneficial option, as it is packed with Vitamin C, a natural anti-inflammatory. She explained, "Hay fever is linked with raised levels of inflammatory markers. But alleviating symptoms can be easier and cheaper than one might think. Evidence from scientific reviews suggests that drinking 100% fruit juice can reduce the concentration of some of these markers. Including it in the diet is a simple and enjoyable way to help keep inflammation in check."

Other Kitchen Staples for Relief

Peppermint tea was also recommended by Dr. Philips as a cupboard staple that may help relieve hay fever symptoms. She noted that it can act as a natural decongestant, helping to thin mucus and ease breathing, while the steam can help unblock sinuses. Additionally, dark chocolate, rich in polyphenols, serves as an antioxidant and anti-allergy aid, supporting the body's response to allergens.

Longer Hay Fever Season Due to Climate Change

The advice comes after a report earlier this year found that hay fever sufferers now endure symptoms for up to two weeks longer than in the 1990s. The Lancet Countdown in Europe 2026 report stated that climate change has "prolonged the pollen season," increasing the amount of time people with hay fever are exposed to allergens.

Pollen Forecast and Heat Warning

The pollen count is set to be 'very high' across southern England and the Midlands on Saturday and Sunday, according to the Met Office. On Saturday, pollen is forecast to be 'high' in northern England, Wales, Northern Ireland, and southern parts of Scotland. On Sunday, Wales and north-west England will also see very high levels, while Yorkshire and Humber, north-east England, Northern Ireland, and most of Scotland are expected to have high pollen counts.

The Met Office has issued an amber extreme heat warning for parts of England and Wales for Monday and Tuesday. Temperatures could climb to 34C, and these areas are also forecast to see very high pollen levels.
