When Does Lavender Bloom in Wales? Best Places to See It

In Wales, the best time to see lavender in bloom is approximately from mid-July to mid-August, with the first blue shades appearing in late June. The brightest colours emerge in July, while harvesting and distillation start in late July and continue into early September. Lavender is known for its silvery-green leaves and spikes of tiny purple flowers, used for gardens, essential oils, aromatherapy, and even cooking.

Top Lavender Fields in Wales

Wales offers several stunning locations to experience lavender fields without travelling to France. Here are the best places to visit:

Welsh Lavender, Builth Wells

Wales' first lavender farm, located on a hilltop in Builth Wells, is run by journalist Nancy Durham and her husband, former Oxford philosophy don William Newton-Smith. They have been growing lavender since 2003 on their farm Cefnperfedd, which sits 1,100 feet up on the Epynt. The farm features beautiful gardens, a distillery, a shop, a café, and accommodation. Visitors can take a self-guided tour of the fields, gardens, and distillery, enjoy tea and cake with views of the Welsh hills, swim in the wild pond, or relax in the new sauna. Lavender oil distilled on the farm is used in FARMERS' creams and balms, available on-site or in their Hay-on-Wye shop. According to their website, lavender is at its best in midsummer, with distillation from late July into mid-August. Even out of season, the distillery remains open. Guests can stay in a renovated pantechnicon with a kitchen and bathroom, located next to the distillery and shop. Visit www.welshlavender.com.

Gower Fresh Christmas Trees, Three Crosses

Run by the fifth-generation Morgan family, this farm grows over half a million Christmas trees on the Gower Peninsula and has the largest reindeer herd in Wales. In summer, they also grow lavender. Visitors can buy tickets to explore the lavender field, with entertainment, picnics, and refreshments. The team announced on Instagram that “lavender season is NEXT on the farm (estimated for June) - we are just waiting on the weather to do its thing.” New features include arches, swings, and photo spots.

Parc Grace Dieu Farm, Monmouthshire

Near Raglan in Monmouthshire, this farm is home to the Gracedieu herd of White Park cattle, Longhorn cattle, American bison, and American quarter horses. Their latest project is a lavender field and a wildflower acre, accessible via guided tours and special summer workshops called “Farm Fridays.” Upcoming events include a Lavender Farm-to-Fragrance Workshop on June 19 with Wales Perfumery, where participants take a guided tour, pick fresh lavender, and blend their own 30ml perfume. The farm also sells fresh and processed lavender products at local markets such as the monthly Abergavenny Craft Fair.

Plan your visit to these lavender fields for a memorable summer day out in Wales.
