Weston-super-Mare's sea lake, a major seaside attraction, is set to face a series of closures this summer, just weeks after reopening from a £1 million winter renovation project. The swimming pool will be shut for maintenance later this month, with additional closures planned across July, September, October, and into November.
Maintenance Work Required
The lake only reopened earlier this year after undergoing the significant refurbishment. However, issues were discovered after the May reopening, prompting further work. A North Somerset council spokesperson explained: 'We're draining the lake to enable our seafront rangers to carry out regular maintenance on the two sluice gates. The gates require frequent checks to make sure that they are operating effectively.'
No dredging will take place during the temporary closure, and no further dredging is currently planned.
Closure Schedule
- June 15 to June 18 (current closure)
- July 14 to July 17
- September 9 to September 11
- October 12 to October 14
- November 24 to November 27
Weston-super-Mare has one of the highest tidal ranges in the world, along with strong currents, making swimming in the area dangerous. In 1929, a barrage was constructed between Knightstone Island and the shoreline near the southern end of Claremont Crescent. That year alone, more than a quarter of a million people used the lake, according to Westonmarinelake.co.uk.
