Households across Wales are being urged to pour mouthwash into their washing machines this June as an inexpensive and simple way to eliminate bacteria and reduce unpleasant smells during laundry cycles. The unusual tip comes from Ian Palmer-Smith, appliance repair specialist at Domestic and General, who suggests adding half a cup of alcohol-based mouthwash directly into the detergent drawer or drum and running an empty hot cycle.
Why mouthwash works for washing machine cleaning
Washing machines, despite being regularly filled with hot water and detergent, build up dirt, grime, and germs over time and can become prone to mould. Palmer-Smith explains that the antiseptic properties of mouthwash kill bacteria, sanitise the drum, and leave it smelling fresh. This 'maintenance wash' should be performed every three months, though a deeper clean is recommended every one to three months with a dedicated washing machine cleaner or alternatives like white vinegar or baking soda.
Additional benefits and precautions
Mouthwash can also be used to disinfect laundry loads with stubborn odours, such as activewear and socks, helping to remove lingering smells and bacteria. However, Palmer-Smith advises using a colourless mouthwash to prevent staining clothes or the washing machine's interior. He cautions against using too much mouthwash at once, as excessive suds can cause overflow if it reacts with detergent, potentially leading to internal damage and costly faults. Additionally, high alcohol content in some mouthwashes can degrade delicate fabrics, so this tip should not be used on delicate clothing.
Palmer-Smith also recommends pairing the mouthwash method with cleaning the detergent drawer and filter, as these areas are often the quickest to get dirty. For those concerned about potential damage, having washing machine insurance can provide peace of mind and cover unexpected repair costs.
