Washing Powder Hack Banishes Dust from Skirting Boards

Households can banish dust by rubbing skirting boards with washing powder, according to experts at Checkatrade. This often overlooked area harbours piles of dust, and tackling it is key to reducing dustiness in the air.

How to Use Washing Powder on Skirting Boards

Checkatrade explains: "Dust down your skirting boards using a baseboard microfibre mop or good old-fashioned dusting cloth (don't use polish spray). Vacuum the area to avoid any dust immediately reattaching itself."

Then, "Add a cupful of washing powder to a lukewarm bowl of water and stir to combine. Take a sponge or cloth and submerge it into the liquid. Wring it out so it's damp and not soaking wet. Wipe along the baseboards, rinsing and repeating steps 4-5 as many times as needed. Dry the skirting boards with a clean towel or highly absorbent kitchen paper."

Additional Tips for Reducing Dust

Once cleaned, rubbing a dryer sheet along the board keeps it fresh and shiny, Checkatrade adds. For those battling large amounts of dust, Ideal Home recommends opting for a hoover with a HEPA filter. These trap small 2.5PM dust particles - too small to see with the naked eye, but large enough to affect air quality. "It's also worth opting for a vacuum with a HEPA filter, as this will ensure that the dust remains captured and contained instead of being released back into the air while vacuuming," Ideal Home added.
