A TikTok user claims that tomatoes can remain fresh in the refrigerator for up to two weeks if washed with two common household ingredients before storage. The method involves sprinkling baking soda and a small amount of distilled vinegar over the tomatoes, then adding water to submerge them. After rinsing, the tomatoes are dabbed dry with kitchen roll and placed in a glass preserving jar with a paper towel at the bottom before being refrigerated.
Expert Support for the Method
Consumer Reports experts have weighed in on the use of vinegar and baking soda for washing produce. They note that research shows soaking greens in vinegar or a vinegar-water solution can reduce bacteria levels, though it does not eliminate all bacteria. Additionally, a 2017 study found that submerging apples in a baking soda solution for two minutes removed more pesticides than a two-minute soak in a bleach solution or a rinse under running tap water.
Consumer Reports recommends washing all produce, including those that will be peeled, in cold running water for 15 to 20 seconds. This should be done before cutting to avoid transferring bacteria or pesticides from the surface to the flesh. A vegetable brush or hands can be used for tougher skins.
Signs of Spoiled Tomatoes
If tomatoes have spoiled, common indicators include visible mould, a mushy or wrinkled texture, and an unusual odour. These signs suggest the tomatoes are no longer safe to eat.
