Weeds tend to sprout everywhere in summer, but I have discovered a really easy way to stop them growing on my patio using nothing more than a kitchen kettle.
How can boiling water remove patio weeds?
It was actually my neighbour who first suggested that boiling water was the most effective method for eliminating weeds. Initially, I was sceptical, as it seemed far too straightforward to be genuinely effective.
Nevertheless, I decided on a whim to carry out some online research and discovered it is considerably more efficient than numerous other eco-friendly weed killers.
Vinegar, salt, bicarbonate of soda, and countless other popular remedies are unable to fully eradicate weeds, as they merely target the visible foliage above ground without penetrating deep beneath the surface to destroy the roots.
Patio weeds are notoriously stubborn to eliminate because their roots burrow deep into the concrete, continuing to spread even when the visible plant appears dead, and any surviving fragment will simply regenerate.
Boiling water proves effective because it penetrates deep into the gaps between paving slabs, reaching the root directly while the intense heat destroys every part of the weed completely.
Does the boiling water method actually work?
Having first attempted this technique last spring, and after persisting with it for over a year, the results of such a straightforward solution have been remarkable.
In practice, it takes just five minutes to tackle the weeds, shortly after which they begin wilting and turning yellow.
By the following morning, the weed should appear brown and crispy. Occasionally, they can take a day or two to die entirely, requiring a second application of boiling water.
Nevertheless, the method demands minimal effort, barely any time and costs absolutely nothing, making it well worth attempting yourself.
It has proven to be the most effective weed removal solution available.
Gone are the days of spending precious days off digging out weeds, and perhaps most importantly, there's no need to use harsh chemical sprays in the garden, keeping it completely safe for my dog, who loves sniffing every plant he comes across.
How to get rid of weeds using boiling water?
Simply fill the kettle, bring it to the boil, then carefully take it outside. This is arguably the trickiest part of the process, so take your time and clear any obstacles from the ground beforehand to eliminate any tripping hazards.
Next, extend your arm fully and hold the kettle at arm's length above the weeds to prevent any splashback. Pour the water as steadily as possible.
Within just a few minutes, the weeds should begin to wilt and rapidly turn yellow. By the following morning, they should appear brown, shrivelled, and completely dead.
All that remains is to sweep the dead weeds from the patio with a brush and dispose of them in the bin.
This straightforward technique has proved to be the most efficient method for clearing my patio, allowing me to relax outdoors this summer without sacrificing my afternoons to endless weeding.
