A simple seasoning trick can elevate frozen chips to restaurant quality, according to food writer Nicola Roy. Writing on Express.co.uk, Roy recommends adding a jar of Kerala Chinese salt and pepper seasoning, available from B&M, to frozen chips cooked in an air fryer.
Roy said: “To me, there's nothing worse than a bland chip. Too many times I've been served a portion of what should be delicious golden fries, but without an ounce of seasoning on them - really, what's the point?”
Why seasoning beats sauce
While dipping sauces can rescue bland chips, Roy noted they can be overpowering. “Sauces can sometimes be really overpowering, whereas a dusting of seasoning simply enhances the flavour but without compromising the texture,” she explained. The seasoning instantly transforms chips from boring and tasteless to bursting with flavour.
How to make the tastiest oven chips
Roy shared her method for perfect chips. She always uses an air fryer because it takes the shortest time and delivers crunchier results than an oven. For chips, she prefers Aldi skin-on fries, which she says taste the best quality and crisp up perfectly.
She cooks the chips at 180°C for 20 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through. Sometimes they need a couple of extra minutes to become crispy and golden. This method makes them incredibly crunchy and bursting with flavours reminiscent of a Chinese takeaway.
Roy concluded: “If you're in charge of dinner this weekend and want to make your chips taste better than ever before, I can't recommend a salt and pepper seasoning enough.”
