Even in summer, bathrooms are at risk of developing mould, but a simple and fast daily task can help prevent it. Colm Lalor, a bathroom expert at Nuie, explained that warm, humid weather can create a false sense of security, as surfaces may stay damp longer than expected, allowing mould to grow.
Why mould thrives in summer
Humid air carries moisture, meaning wet towels, shower screens and corners can remain damp for extended periods. This moisture can lead to musty smells, mould and grubby grout and sealant. However, a cheap and quick solution exists that requires no harsh chemicals.
The squeegee method
According to bathroom experts, using a squeegee on the shower screen and wettest tiles after every shower is a one-minute job that 'pays off'. It removes significant surface water before it evaporates back into the room, helping the space dry faster. Squeegees are inexpensive – 80p at Dunelm or £3.49 on Amazon – and experts say they do 'serious heavy lifting' in clearing moisture and keeping mould at bay.
Other important bathroom habits
Towels should be hung up properly rather than folded in a heap, and bathmats need to dry fully between uses. Shower curtains should be stretched out rather than scrunched. Opening a window after the steam clears, and propping the bathroom door open, helps move humid air out. Where possible, opening another window elsewhere in the house creates a through-draught to shift moisture away.
