The Grass People have shared a four-step guide to help gardeners restore their lawns after a heatwave. The experts explained that it is normal for grass to become wilted, patchy and brown during hot weather as it enters a dormant state, but all is not lost.
Four steps to revive your lawn
The first step is to rake the surface and remove any dead grass. Next, aerate the ground by piercing the surface with a garden fork to create air vents, allowing the lawn to breathe and recuperate.
After aeration, overseed the turf by spreading a substantial quantity of appropriate seed throughout the space. Once the temperature eventually drops, apply fertiliser, the specialists suggest.
Watering advice
The experts noted that the unattractive discolouration and drooping are part of the lawn's defence mechanism as it enters a dormant period to manage water shortage. They recommend keeping the roots properly hydrated by watering in the early hours to avoid afternoon heat, or in the evening after sunset. Alternatively, consider using an oscillating timed sprinkler to keep the lawn watered throughout the day.
