Spring has officially arrived, prompting gardeners to tackle various outdoor tasks. One unexpected job worth considering involves placing a pair of tights outside – as peculiar as that might sound.
A gardening enthusiast, known as View from the Potting Bench on TikTok, recently demonstrated clever ways to utilise old tights. He described the techniques as utterly "ingenious".
He explained: "Start off by cutting off each individual leg from your pair of tights. Once you've got the legs off like this, you can use them in multiple ways." He suggested cutting them into strips to use as tree ties, which are strong enough but also flexible enough to protect trees from high winds.
Another use is to cut a small hole in the top of the leg, hang it on a shed door, and slide pots inside to keep the shed tidy. The bottom can be cut off to allow easy removal of pots.
Worn-out tights are perfect for outdoor applications thanks to their flexible, gentle and hard-wearing properties. Typical uses include fashioning delicate plant supports, creating hammocks for heavy produce like melons, storing onions or garlic, and lining drainage holes in pots to retain compost.
