Shower heads are among the bathroom fixtures most prone to rapid limescale buildup, which can cause blockages and reduce water pressure. The chalky deposit forms when hard water evaporates, leaving behind calcium and magnesium minerals.
Regular descaling not only improves efficiency but also extends the lifespan of the fixture. While many commercial products exist, a bathroom expert recommends a natural, budget-friendly alternative.
Expert's Vinegar Soak Method
Brian Toward, CEO of bathroom retailer Wholesale Domestic, suggests using distilled white vinegar to tackle limescale. He advises pouring the vinegar into a zip-lock bag and submerging the unscrewed shower head completely, allowing it to soak for at least one hour.
"Distilled white vinegar is the answer to cleaning your shower head and addressing your limescale problems," says Toward. He cautions against soaking too long, as the vinegar could potentially damage the head.
Post-Soak Rinse and Cost
After soaking, remove the head, spray with disinfectant, and rinse with hot water to clear any remaining residue. Distilled white vinegar is available at retailers like Tesco and Aldi for just 35p.
This method is particularly relevant for the estimated 60% of UK residents living in hard-water areas, where limescale can accumulate quickly on taps and kettles as well.
