Plumbers at Drain Doctor have shared three straightforward hacks to tackle basic clogging problems without needing a plunger. A blocked drain can be frustrating, whether in the bathroom or kitchen, as grease, food waste, hair, soap and other debris accumulate over time, limiting water flow and causing complete blockages. These obstructions often lead to slow-draining sinks, foul smells, overflowing drains and potentially expensive water damage.
Bent wire hanger method
The experts said: "Simple enough, but surprisingly effective. Take an ordinary wire coat hanger and straighten it out as best you can. Then, bend one end over to create a small hook." They advised pushing it past the drain cover and fishing out hair and debris. "Remember, you always want to be pulling gunk out, not pushing it further. When you've got out as much as you can, run the hot water, and it should clear things up nicely."
Bicarbonate of soda and vinegar
A combination of bicarbonate of soda and vinegar can be remarkably effective. Simply combine a third of a cup of bicarbonate of soda with an equal measure of vinegar in a measuring jug. It will fizz immediately, then pour it down the blocked drain. According to the plumbers, the fizzing reaction helps dislodge debris, hair and grime. Leave it to work for an hour or overnight if possible, then flush the drain through with hot water. Alternatively, push as much dry bicarbonate of soda as possible down the drain first, before pouring the vinegar on top.
Boiling water
The experts said: "Tips don't get any easier than this. Put the kettle on and boil up as much water as it will hold. Now pour it slowly down the drain in two to three stages, allowing the hot water to work for several seconds in between each pour." This is usually the easiest and quickest way to unclog a drain, and sometimes adding washing-up liquid helps dissolve any grease.
