Peace Lilies Bloom Better in Summer with Rice Water
Peace Lilies Bloom Better with Rice Water in Summer

Peace lilies, popular low-maintenance houseplants, require extra nutrients during summer to support rapid growth and blooming. Without sufficient nourishment, they may develop weak stems, dull leaves, and fail to flower, according to gardening expert Asiya, who runs the Instagram account Plant Hacks N Beyond.

Rice Water as a Natural Fertilizer

Asiya recommends using uncooked rice water—the water left after rinsing rice—as a natural fertilizer. 'Uncooked, washed rice water is my secret weapon. It's packed with nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium that your peace lily will love,' she explains. This method boosts plant immunity, supports root health, and enhances leaf shine.

The liquid contains three essential nutrients: nitrogen promotes robust leaf growth and lustre; potassium strengthens disease resistance and moisture uptake, crucial in summer; and phosphorus is vital for flowering. By supplying these nutrients during the growing season, rice water increases the likelihood of multiple, long-lasting blooms.

How to Apply Rice Water

To prepare the solution, save the water from rinsing uncooked rice and let it sit at room temperature for several hours or overnight to ferment slightly, which breaks down nutrients for easier absorption. Crucially, avoid using cooked rice water, as it is thicker and may clog soil or choke roots.

Before watering, dilute one part rice water with four parts regular water. Undiluted rice water is too concentrated and can block soil. Asiya advises watering peace lilies with this mixture once a week. 'The results? Healthier, greener leaves and no more browning tips,' she says.

Expected Results

Regular weekly applications of diluted rice water help peace lilies flourish, producing sizable, vibrant blooms and shiny green leaves throughout summer. This simple, natural method recycles kitchen scraps while providing essential nutrients for optimal plant health.
