St Columbkille's Hall was filled with music, history and plenty of community spirit as 170 of the town's older residents gathered for a 'Burgh Bash'. The afternoon celebration on Saturday, June 6, was hosted by the local community group Nostalgia to mark the Rutherglen 900 celebrations, commemorating the town being granted a Royal Charter in 1126.
After Councillor Robert Brown delivered an engaging speech outlining the programme of events celebrating the town's landmark year, popular singer and entertainer Simon Sims took to the stage. His memorable performance had everyone singing and dancing along, keeping the energy in the hall high. Guests were also treated to a tasty buffet prepared by caterer Erin Welsh.
Gordon Hutchison said: "Thank you, Erin and thank you to all volunteers and hall staff. A special thanks to John Paton, who piped people in." Reflecting on the success of the afternoon, Nostalgia's Geraldine Baird MBE emphasised how vital funding is for these free community gatherings. She said: "Our events could not happen without sponsorship. Our sincere thanks go to the Corra Foundation for supporting this event."
Special recognition and thanks were also extended to key organisers Kathleen Lenaghan and Gordon Hutchison, whose coordination and commentary kept the afternoon running perfectly and helped make the commemoration a memorable day for Rutherglen's older community.
