Peace lilies are celebrated for being undemanding houseplants and are typically easy to maintain, as long as you water them occasionally. Nevertheless, when the summer months roll around, watering by itself isn't enough, as they need to be moved away from windowsills if you want to preserve their health.
Positioning plants beside windows is standard practice since they need light, but peace lilies are especially delicate and too much sun exposure can damage their leaves, turning their flowers brown and fragile. Rather, Craig Wilson, a gardening expert and founder of Gardeners Dream, has shared that peace lilies will flourish if you take the time to relocate them somewhere more humid in your home.
Best Room for Peace Lily Blooms
Craig said: "Peace lilies need watering, but not nearly as much as you might expect. Normally, it is best to water your peace lily every few days, with the plant even being tolerant to being watered less often if it is kept somewhere humid in the house like the bathroom."
Peace lilies are tropical plants that develop on rainforest floors in their native habitat, surviving by absorbing moisture from the warm, humid atmosphere surrounding them. This is exactly why placing a peace lily in a corner of your bathroom, or alternatively the kitchen, is considerably more advantageous, as the hot steam helps to keep them hydrated and healthy.
Light and Humidity Requirements
Peace lilies in rainforests also benefit from dappled, indirect sunlight that filters through the canopy of tall trees, which is why it is recommended to position them fairly near to, but not directly against, a window. Craig said: "It is best not to leave peace lilies by external doors or windows because the plants don't do well in exposed conditions. Too much sunlight or dry air can impair a peace lily's ability to flower, so taking the time to move them to a location that better replicates their native environment will promote blooming."
That said, if your bathroom or kitchen simply lacks the space for a peace lily, there is no cause for concern, as regularly occupied rooms in the house also tend to create a decent level of humidity. Since people release a small quantity of moisture when they breathe, a peace lily can flourish just as well in your bedroom or lounge.
Morning Light Is Key
Where feasible, look for a position in your home that gets abundant morning light, as peace lilies prefer the softer rays to the harsher intensity of the afternoon sun. Rooms with east-facing windows generally capture the most sunlight as the sun comes up each morning, making them the perfect location for a peace lily. By simply taking a moment to move your peace lily to a more appropriate position, you significantly improve your chances of enjoying plentiful blooms that will endure substantially longer.
