Peace lilies are well-known as low-maintenance houseplants, but in July they need to be moved away from windowsills to stay healthy. Gardening expert and founder of Gardeners Dream, Craig Wilson, explained that peace lilies flourish when placed in more humid areas of the home.
Why peace lilies need humidity
Peace lilies originate from tropical rainforest floors, where they draw moisture from warm, humid air. Wilson said: "Peace lilies need watering, but not nearly as much as you might expect. Normally, it is best to water your peace lily every few days, with the plant even being tolerant to being watered less often if it is kept somewhere humid in the house like the bathroom."
Ideal locations for peace lilies
Positioning a peace lily in a bathroom or kitchen is beneficial because hot steam helps keep the plant watered and in good condition. They also need dappled, low-level sunlight, similar to their natural habitat under towering trees. Wilson advised: "It is best not to leave peace lilies by external doors or windows because the plants don't do well in exposed conditions."
If the bathroom or kitchen has no space, frequently used rooms like bedrooms or living rooms also generate reasonable humidity from people breathing. Morning light is preferred over harsh afternoon glare, making east-facing windows ideal.
