Tom Christopher, 25, has apologised for carrying a bath to the top of Pen y Fan and leaving it there. The digital content creator said he attempted to break the record for the world's highest bath, soaking at the 886m peak before planning to leave the tub for 48 hours for others to enjoy.
Rugby Team Steps In
Players from Cardiff Rugby's academy discovered the bath 24 hours later while helping National Trust workers with maintenance. Assuming it was dumped, they carried it back down the mountain. A social media post from the academy read: "Fantastic day for senior academy supporting the national trust at Pen y Fan with some invaluable work experience and teamwork essential. Also the group had the pleasure of carrying a bath from the top down. Who would leave a bath up there?! #mindless."
Apology and Explanation
Christopher admitted his mistake: "I know that night I should've taken it down and I am sorry. It was my fault and my mistake, I have definitely learnt my lesson to not do it again. But it was genuinely for a good cause." He said he wanted to create a community event, leaving signs and bottles for people to bring water up. The video received over 200,000 views in four hours, and he received about 40 photos from strangers using the bath.
Christopher added: "My intention wasn't to leave it up there, I really was planning on taking it back down, but the amount of people that were messaging me was insane. I should have left a note on the bath explaining that really." He said the bath cost him £400, putting him in an overdraft, and that National Trust rangers informed him it had been crushed.
Online Reaction
The stunt sparked controversy, with some calling for a fly-tipping fine. Christopher commented: "Social media is always hard. One minute there is lots of love, the next you are berated for being 'lazy' and a 'fly-tipper'. It's negative on me but the positive thing is that I've learnt my lesson and this whole situation shows people are sticking up for our outdoor spaces."
