Freeze Your Spuds to Keep Them Fresh for Months, Food Hack Reveals

A potato-loving household has discovered a simple method to keep spuds fresh for up to three months without sprouting or wrinkling. The trick involves parboiling and freezing the potatoes, a technique that prevents the mushiness often associated with frozen raw potatoes.

The process begins by peeling the potatoes—optional but recommended for effective blanching. They are then boiled in cold water for 10 minutes, drained, and laid out on kitchen paper to absorb excess moisture. After slicing into thick rounds, the potatoes are frozen in a single layer on a baking tray for four hours before being transferred to a freezer-safe bag.

After one month, half of the frozen potatoes were thawed overnight in the fridge and finished cooking in boiling water. The taste was indistinguishable from freshly stored potatoes. Three months later, the remaining batch also retained its fresh flavour and texture.

Food waste charity Love Food Hate Waste notes that while potatoes can survive up to a year in the freezer, they are best consumed within three months. This method not only extends shelf life but also saves time on future meal prep, as the potatoes are already partially cooked.
