Lidl is launching a free family-friendly activity in selected stores across Scotland this summer, giving children the chance to turn the weekly shop into a fun fruit and vegetable scavenger hunt.
From mid-July, children visiting participating stores in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee and the Highlands will be able to use the supermarket's mini trolleys to take part in an interactive I Spy challenge designed to encourage healthy eating during the school holidays.
Special recyclable tags attached to children's trolleys feature clues that encourage little shoppers to find different fruit and vegetables around the store. Hints include identifying broccoli as 'mini trees' that are 'green and love rain to help them grow' and carrots as 'orange sticks' that 'grow in the ground and are very crunchy'.
Initiative Trial and Community Focus
The initiative is being trialled in 100 Lidl stores across the UK, with locations selected using local deprivation data to help support communities where the programme could have the greatest impact.
The launch comes as new research commissioned by Lidl found that 26 per cent of children aged between eight and 11 said helping to shop for healthy food would encourage them to try healthier options.
The survey also revealed some surprising gaps in children's knowledge about where food comes from. More than half (52 per cent) believed pineapples grow on trees, while 28 per cent were unsure where strawberries come from.
Additional Offers and Online Access
As part of the campaign, Lidl Plus customers will also be able to claim free fruit and vegetable vouchers over the summer holidays. Families whose local store is not taking part can still download the scavenger hunt game online.
The activity builds on Lidl's Foodies programme, which teaches primary school pupils about nutrition, healthy eating and where fresh food comes from. Now in its second year, the initiative has reached more than 640,000 children and is available in over a quarter of primary schools across Britain.
Company Comment and Store List
Georgina Hall, Director of Corporate Affairs at Lidl GB, said: "Between the 'I'm bored' comments and tactical snack-grabs, we know that the weekly food shop can be tricky for families when little ones are in tow. That's why we're bringing the success of our Lidl Foodies schools initiative onto the shop floor to make learning fun and improve the shopping experience for families this summer. By turning our mini-trolleys into a fun yet educational scavenger hunt game, we can give our littlest shoppers a foodie adventure that encourages them to discover more about fruit and vegetables."
