Lettuce stays fresh 14 days longer with towel wrap hack

Lettuce can spoil quickly if not stored properly, but a simple kitchen hack can keep it fresh for up to two weeks longer. Nicole Modic, a cookbook author and founder of Kale Junkie, revealed that removing lettuce from its plastic packaging and wrapping it in a towel or paper towel extends its life significantly.

"For this hack, all you need to do is start by cutting the stem off of your head of lettuce, then wrap the lettuce in a towel or paper towel," Modic said.

Why lettuce spoils quickly

Lettuce consists predominantly of water, which gives it crispness but also causes it to dehydrate quickly when exposed to dry fridge air. It releases considerable moisture, and stagnant water leads to sliminess and deterioration. Plastic packaging traps excessive moisture, creating condensation that leaves lettuce waterlogged.

A tea towel or kitchen paper absorbs surplus moisture while creating a protective barrier, keeping lettuce fresh for substantially longer.

Step-by-step storage method

First, dry the lettuce thoroughly using a salad spinner or by placing leaves on a clean tea towel and patting until completely dry. Then loosely wrap the lettuce in a dry tea towel or several sheets of kitchen roll. Place it in a lidded food container or sandwich bag, but leave the container or bag slightly open to allow moisture to escape.

Store the lettuce in the crisper drawer of the fridge. It will remain fresh for a fortnight or longer, allowing you to enjoy crisp leafy greens without waste.
