Garlic, a common kitchen staple costing as little as 22p per bulb, can naturally deter rats and mice from homes, according to DIY specialist Glen Peskett of Saxton Blades. During summer, rodents breed rapidly and seek food and shelter, making homes vulnerable to infestations.
Why Garlic Works Against Rodents
Peskett explained: "Garlic is a favourite all around the world, it smells amazing, has health benefits and transforms any dish you put it in. But for rats? That strong, pungent smell is their absolute nightmare." Rats rely heavily on their sense of smell to navigate and find food. Garlic's sulfur compounds overwhelm their senses and disorient them, and the rodents associate these compounds with toxic substances, naturally deterring them from entering homes.
Cost-Effective Solution
A four-pack of garlic bulbs costs just 87p at supermarkets like Asda, equating to roughly 22p per bulb. This makes garlic an affordable alternative to professional pest control, which can be costly. Beyond financial savings, preventing infestations also reduces the risk of diseases carried by rodents.
How to Use Garlic as a Deterrent
Place garlic cloves near entry points where rodents are likely to infiltrate, such as basements, garages, kitchens, and lofts. Position them close to gaps and doorways around the home's exterior. Other effective natural repellents include garlic oil, cayenne pepper, and apple cider vinegar.
Additional Prevention Tips
- Reduce clutter: Minimise hiding spots where rats can build nests.
- Manage food waste: Keep bins tightly sealed, empty them frequently, and clean up spills promptly.
- Seal gaps: Inspect under doors, vents, and other openings, sealing even the smallest cracks to prevent entry.
By combining garlic placement with these measures, homeowners can naturally protect their properties from rodent invasions year-round.
