Storing blueberries in glass mason jars instead of plastic containers can keep them fresh for up to two weeks longer, according to food storage expert Val Riley. The key is reducing trapped moisture, which plastic packaging promotes, leading to mould.
The Problem with Plastic Packaging
Supermarkets package blueberries in plastic containers for stacking convenience, but this traps moisture. Blueberries have high water content and release water during storage, creating a humid environment ideal for mould growth. Val Riley, founder of Lovely Lucky Life, advises switching to glass jars with lids slightly ajar to allow humidity to escape.
"The berries truly stay fresh for longer - they don't mush or mould nearly as quickly as they do in the plastic," Riley said.
Step-by-Step Storage Method
To maximize freshness, rinse blueberries in a colander under cold water to remove bacteria and debris. Spread them on a plate lined with paper towels and pat dry completely. Discard any soft or mouldy berries. Transfer to a clean glass jar, place a paper towel on top to absorb excess moisture, and loosely fasten the lid. Store in the fridge.
Riley noted: "By putting the fruits and veggies in sealed jars straight into the fridge, they last about twice as long as they would in the plastic."
Benefits Beyond Freshness
This method reduces food waste and saves money, as blueberries can stay fresh for one to two weeks beyond typical shelf life. The glass jar also frees up fridge space and allows visibility of the fruit. Always ensure berries are dry before storing to prevent mould.
