Japanese maples, also known as acers, are prized for their vibrant red leaves but are vulnerable to summer heatwaves that can cause leaf scorch, shrivelling, and premature drop. In severe cases, this can lead to dieback of small branches. Gardening expert and TikTok creator Ish (@gardening.with.ish) has shared three key jobs to keep acers from turning 'crispy' during hot weather.
Wind Protection Is Crucial
Wind can dry out Japanese maple leaves quickly, regardless of temperature. Ish advises minimising wind exposure by placing the plant near a fence or larger plant for shelter. If a fair breeze is expected, keep the maple well-watered. In harsh winds, move potted plants to a sheltered spot, such as under a pergola or in a shaded area.
Manage Sun and Heat Exposure
Too much direct sunlight and heat will crisp up leaves during summer. Ish recommends keeping Japanese maples in a partially shaded area and ensuring they are well-watered. This combination can make a 'massive difference' to the plant's condition. Potted acers can be moved to shadier locations as needed.
Use Frost Fleece as a Secret Weapon
For plants that cannot be moved, such as those in the ground, Ish suggests using frost fleece (horticultural fleece) as a protective measure. This lightweight, breathable fabric is typically used for cold weather but also works in heatwaves. Ish explains: 'If you haven't got yours in a pot and the heatwave is affecting it, my secret weapon is actually frost fleecing.' The fleece reduces direct sunlight while retaining moisture and reflecting rays. It traps cool air inside, keeping the plant cooler. Ish adds: 'As a result, my Acer will stay fine through heatwaves and extreme weather, and I don't need to move it.'
Additional Tips
Gardeners should also monitor soil moisture regularly, as Japanese maples prefer consistently moist but well-drained soil. Mulching around the base can help retain moisture and regulate soil temperature. Avoiding fertiliser during heat stress is recommended, as it can exacerbate leaf scorch.
