Three Simple April Tasks to Help Hydrangeas Thrive and Bloom

With spring just weeks away, gardens across the UK are preparing to burst into colour. Hydrangeas, already showing signs of new growth, can benefit from three straightforward tasks recommended by gardening expert Ish.

In a recent TikTok video, Ish advised gardeners to prune old stems that are not sprouting. By cutting these stems just below the last node, energy is redirected to new growth, encouraging healthier blooms.

The second step involves applying a slow-release feed, such as blood, fish and bone meal, around the base of the plant. Watering it in generously ensures the nutrients reach the roots effectively.

Finally, a generous layer of mulch—such as compost or bark—should be spread around the base. This helps retain moisture in the soil, which hydrangeas need to thrive. Ish noted that while they prefer well-draining soil, they also tolerate clay soil that holds moisture.

By following these three steps, gardeners can expect amazing blooms this year. Ish also emphasised the importance of keeping the soil moist and providing partial sun exposure for optimal growth.
