Gerwyn Price says becoming a farmer may have hindered his darts career after admitting he is struggling for motivation. Earlier this year, the Welsh arrowsmith purchased farmland in Treharris, which he plans to move into with his family. Jeremy Clarkson-style, Price has been getting his hands dirty with his new project.
Price survives scare at World Matchplay
After surviving a scare in the first round of the World Matchplay against Martin Schindler, he brought up life on the farm and how it may be having a detrimental impact on his game. Price, who recovered from 8-5 down to win 11-9, said: "That was the worst I've played all season. It goes to show, throwing sheep about instead of darts, it doesn't help! It was a tough one for me. I've got no confidence at the minute because I haven't played a lot."
Struggles with motivation
Price spoke about his struggles with motivation at the recent US Masters in New York. After his win over Brayden Hall, the Iceman said: "I just couldn't be a**** to be up there. I just had a funny feeling. I'd rather be in the house. I just concentrate on my own game, but I don't know what it is. The last couple of months, I just haven't been mentally with it and have just been going through the motions."
Farm as distraction
Asked about how he might get his mojo back, the 41-year-old said: "Get the farm finished. I've got things going on at home that are distracting me a little bit. So as soon as things go to plan there and things start moving… Sometimes it's [the farm] a good distraction. It can keep you away from darts a little bit. But I've got too much going on at home and too many distractions. When I'm away, I don't want to be away. I want to be at home, and I want things to be happening around the farm and with the planning I've got going on. So when I turn up, I can't be bothered to be there, and it shouldn't be that way."
Price now has another distraction, albeit a happy one, after he announced he is set to become a grandad, with his eldest daughter Emily expecting her first child. This week at least, Price's focus is on darts while he remains in contention for a maiden World Matchplay title. He faces Rob Cross in the second round on Wednesday night.
