As temperatures climb across the UK this week, gardeners are being urged to take immediate action to protect their potted plants from heat stress. Simply Seed, a UK-based seed supplier, has issued advice on the single most effective step to safeguard container plants during hot weather: moving them into shade.
Why Potted Plants Need Extra Care
Potted plants are more vulnerable to drying out and overheating than those planted in the ground. Their limited soil volume heats up quickly, and roots can bake in direct sunlight. According to Simply Seed, shading is “crucial” to help plants cope with heat stress. The experts explained: “Shading plants can reduce heat exposure and prevent roots from baking and plants from getting heat stress.”
The technique is an effective way to help plants survive and stay healthy during the upcoming heatwave. Simply Seed also recommends placing hanging baskets on the ground to increase moisture retention and shade coverage. In extreme heat, smaller containers should be moved to shaded areas to keep the plants cool.
Signs of Heat Stress
Gardeners can identify heat stress through several warning signs: wilting or drooping leaves, especially in the morning; scorched leaf edges; slow growth; and flowers dropping. If these symptoms appear, Simply Seed advises responding quickly with a deep soak and providing shade until the plant recovers.
Watering Tips for Hot Weather
“Potted plants need more frequent watering than ground plants due to limited soil moisture,” the experts said. “Regularly checking pots is crucial to prevent heat stress and wilting. Soak the root ball until water drains from the planter to ensure potted plants get enough water.” They also recommend adding water-storing granules to pots to help retain moisture and warn against underwatering.
Avoid Overwatering
Equally important is not overwatering. “It’s easy to panic and drown plants during hot weather but overwatering can suffocate roots, cause rot or flush nutrients from the soil,” Simply Seed cautioned. They advise checking soil moisture 5–10 cm down; if it’s still damp, wait before watering again. Using a moisture meter for pots is recommended to prevent overwatering.
With the heatwave forecast, these simple steps can make a significant difference in keeping potted plants healthy and thriving.
