Unconventional Heatwave Protection for Plants
As the UK braces for continued high temperatures and potential heatwaves, gardeners are seeking ways to protect their plants. Gardening expert and TikTok creator Ish has shared an unusual yet effective method: using frost fleecing, typically employed for cold weather protection, to shield plants from scorching heat.
In a recent video, Ish explained that frost fleecing, also known as horticultural fleece, can reflect sunlight, keep the air inside cooler, retain soil moisture longer, and reduce crispy leaves on plants. He described it as “the most unlikely thing you could ever imagine” for heatwave protection, yet highly effective.
How Frost Fleecing Works in Heat
Frost fleecing is a lightweight, spun-bound, breathable fabric usually used to trap heat during cold nights and prevent frost. However, its properties also make it suitable for hot weather. The light colour reflects UV rays, similar to greenhouse shading, and the airy material allows some sunlight through while keeping the plant cooler. Water can still penetrate the fleece, making watering straightforward.
Ish recommends two methods: laying a generous amount of fleece on the soil of potted plants, or wrapping the entire plant for taller specimens like Japanese maples. The coverage maintains a cooler microclimate inside, protecting the plant from heat stress.
Practical Tips and Benefits
The fleece is thin, translucent, and reusable, costing around £5 per roll, making it a budget-friendly solution. Ish emphasised that “the most uncommon thing is usually the best” for plant protection. This hack is particularly useful for potted plants that cannot be moved to shade.
In the video caption, Ish wrote: “You wouldn’t expect it but this is one of the best ways to protect your plants from the scorching heatwaves this summer. Frost fleecing not only reflects sunlight but it keeps the air inside it cooler, help retain moisture longer in the soil and reducing crispy leaves on your plants.”
