Many UK households are doing everything they can to keep their homes cool this summer. From shutting curtains to opening windows, Brits are relying on familiar tricks to beat the summer heat. But not every go-to solution has the effect people expect. One common item that's meant to bring relief could actually leave rooms feeling warmer instead. It's an easy mistake to make, and one that often goes unnoticed during a heatwave; here's why you're using a fan wrong.
Why fans are warming your home
Fans cannot actually reduce the air temperature; they merely circulate air around a room, so the device will be ineffective at cooling you down if you are already seated in a warm space. A home writer at Good Housekeeping further explained: "Fans are running around the clock right now, but if they're not strategically placed, there's little point in them. For instance, if your fan is just oscillating at the end of your bed, it's just circulating the hot air around the room – it's not cooling things down."
The expert added: "A clever way to make your fan work harder is to aim it out of an open window at night, when it's cooler outside. That way, it's pushing the hotter air out of the room and encouraging better circulation."
How to boost your fan's effectiveness
Another method to boost your fan's effectiveness requires nothing more than ice and cold water. Amy, a mother and founder of Everything Mummy, revealed that placing ice-cold water in front of a fan will enhance the cooling effect as air passes through it, leaving you feeling considerably more refreshed. She said: "Switch the fan, leaving it in the oscillating position (i.e. so that it passes through a 180° arc) and enjoy the sudden and welcome blast of a cold breeze."
The technique works most effectively during dry conditions, such as a heatwave. All that is required is a wide bowl or tray filled with water, as the greater surface area allows more cold air to transfer into the surrounding atmosphere. Simply position the bowl of water directly in front of the fan, ensuring no electronic devices are in close proximity. Switch the fan on, and you should swiftly notice the air becoming lighter and altogether more refreshing.
Longer-lasting cooling solutions
For those seeking a longer-lasting cooling solution, placing a damp sheet near a window can prove equally effective at moistening and cooling the air throughout your home. Amy said: "Place a fan at one window to push the hot air out with a wet sheet hanging over a window too. It moistens and cools the air as it comes into your home." While this method requires slightly more effort, the sheet will naturally absorb incoming heat, maintaining a consistent flow of cool air into the room. It operates on precisely the same principle as positioning cold water near a fan, yet tends to be far more long-lasting, helping you remain safe and comfortable even during the most sweltering weather.
