A fire broke out on Hightown Dunes on Tuesday evening, July 14, sending thick smoke into the air. Firefighters from Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service were called to Thornbeck Avenue at 8:12pm. Three fire engines attended the scene, using two high pressure hose reel jets and beaters to tackle the blaze. The fire was extinguished by 10:44pm, but crews and relief teams continued to monitor and damp down the area overnight. Firefighters remained on site Wednesday morning, July 15.
Second fire on Loop Line cycle path
Around the same time, another fire broke out on the Loop Line cycle path near Montgomery Road in Aintree. Fire services were called at approximately 8:20pm. The service reported a "significant" amount of smoke generated by the fire and urged residents to keep doors and windows closed. A video sent to the Liverpool ECHO showed plumes of smoke billowing into the air. The fire was extinguished by 9:15pm, with crews remaining to damp down and check for hot spots.
Previous wildfires in North Wales
These incidents occurred just two days after smoke covered parts of Liverpool on Sunday, July 12, following a "major" incident in North Wales. Firefighters tackled two large blazes in Conwy and Gwynedd over the weekend, forcing evacuations in nearby communities. The fires affected several beauty spots near Merseyside.
