Many people hang their towels outside to dry in the summer sun, but one laundry expert has urged households to reconsider this practice. Deyan Dimitrov, CEO of on-demand laundry service Laundryheap, warned that drying towels on a line during hot, windy weather could leave them feeling rough, scratchy, and less soft.
Why Wind Is Bad for Towels
According to Dimitrov, while wind speeds up drying and gives sheets a crisp feel, it is a harsh opponent for thicker items like towels, jeans, and hoodies. He explained: "It can be tempting to place your damp garments on the washing line when it's blowing a gale. Wind speeds up the drying process and can give sheets that crisp, dry feeling. But for some clothes, like towels, jeans and hoodies, the wind is a harsh opponent. It can leave garments feeling rough, scratchy and less soft. For these items, it’s best to stick to a tumble dryer."
How to Restore Softness
If towels have become stiff after outdoor drying, there are simple remedies. Adding half a cup of white vinegar to the wash cycle can help remove chemical buildup and residue, restoring softness after a few washes. Bicarbonate of soda is another effective option, acting as a natural deodoriser to eliminate damp odours. However, experts advise not to use vinegar and bicarbonate of soda together, as they react with each other and neutralise the effect.
Proper Towel Storage
Storage also plays a key role in maintaining towel softness. Experts at Clean Linen and Workwear recommend avoiding overloading shelves or drawers, which can cause stiffness and wrinkles. Instead, store towels side-by-side rather than in stacks to prevent flattening and ensure even use. They also emphasise hanging towels up to dry properly between uses: "Avoid piling damp towels on the floor or in a laundry basket. This can trap moisture in the folds, leading to mildew and bacterial growth. Instead, drape your towel over a towel rail to allow it to hang flat and air dry quickly."

While the UK has enjoyed sweltering weather ideal for outdoor drying, consumers should be selective about which items go on the line. Delicate fabrics and lightweight cottons benefit from the sun and wind, but towels and heavy garments are better suited to a tumble dryer.
