Evening Check Prevents Hydrangea Wilting in Summer Heat
Evening Check Prevents Hydrangea Wilting in Summer Heat

Hydrangeas, known for their dramatic blooms, often droop in hot weather, but a simple evening routine can keep them healthy. According to Bethany Naccarato, a trained master gardener and founder of Blueacre Garden, watering hydrangeas in the afternoon is ineffective and can harm the plant. She advises checking the plants in the evening instead.

Why Hydrangeas Wilt in Afternoon Heat

Hydrangeas lose moisture quickly in July due to their large leaves and blooms. In the afternoon, when the sun is highest, soil loses water faster than roots can replace it, causing the plant to soften and flowers to hang down to conserve moisture. Naccarato explains: “Ever notice your hydrangeas looking sad and wilted in the afternoon heat? Don’t panic—many hydrangeas wilt temporarily during hot days to conserve moisture and often perk back up as temperatures cool in the evening.”

Avoid Afternoon Watering

While it may seem logical to water wilting hydrangeas in the afternoon, most moisture evaporates before reaching the roots. Over time, this practice can kill the plant. Naccarato warns that watering in the heat is not effective and suggests waiting until evening to assess the plant’s condition.

Evening Check and Morning Watering

In the evening, after the sun sets, hydrangeas that have recovered and stand upright are healthy. If they remain drooping, they need immediate watering. Although evening watering is generally discouraged due to slug attraction, an occasional emergency watering is acceptable. For long-term health, Naccarato recommends watering in the morning, when cooler temperatures allow soil to absorb moisture properly, keeping roots hydrated through the hot day.

Benefits of Proper Hydration

Morning watering ensures hydrangeas are well-hydrated to withstand harsh afternoon sun, promoting continuous blooming all summer. By checking plants in the evening and watering in the morning, gardeners can prevent wilting and maintain vibrant flowers.
