Gardeners are being encouraged to use Epsom salt, a common bathroom item, to help their lawns grow thicker and greener, especially after heatwave damage.
Why Epsom Salt Works
Epsom salt is not ordinary table salt but a naturally occurring mineral rich in nutrients. Its magnesium content helps plants produce more chlorophyll, leading to a deeper green color. It also aids photosynthesis, allowing grass to absorb more sunlight and recover faster.
How to Apply
Mix one tablespoon of Epsom salt per litre of water until fully dissolved, then apply with a sprayer, spreader, or watering can. The best times are morning or early evening, as afternoon sun can cause water to evaporate quickly and potentially scorch the grass.
Epsom salt should be used as a supplement, not a replacement for fertiliser. Overuse can harm the soil, so apply no more than once every six weeks, with most lawns needing only one treatment per season.
