Gardeners are being encouraged to use a common bathroom product to achieve a thicker, greener lawn this summer. Epsom salt, typically found in the bathing aisle of supermarkets, can revive tired grass and promote lush growth.
Why Epsom Salt Works
Epsom salt is not cooking salt but a naturally occurring mineral rich in nutrients. It supplies magnesium, which helps plants produce more chlorophyll, leading to a deeper green color. Additionally, it encourages photosynthesis, allowing grass to absorb more sunlight and recover quickly from heat stress.
Increased chlorophyll helps lawns retain moisture during warm weather, keeping grass dense and healthy, and preventing brown patches.
How to Apply Epsom Salt
To use, dissolve one tablespoon of Epsom salt per litre of water. Mix thoroughly in a sprayer, spreader, or watering can before applying. The best times are morning or early evening, as afternoon sun can reduce water penetration and risk scorching the grass.
Epsom salt should be a supplement, not a substitute for fertiliser, and used no more than once every six weeks. Most lawns need just one application per season.
