Why Dust Clings to Skirting Boards and Blinds
Dust is especially drawn to window blinds and skirting boards because these surfaces are often made of wood, plastic, or other materials that generate static electricity. Static causes dust and grime to stubbornly cling to surfaces, returning again and again unless a protective barrier is created.
Kerry explained: "My top tip for a quick clean of venetian blinds? Use a tumble dryer sheet for a quick dust. The sheet just picks up all the dust perfectly and smells amazing too. Also extremely useful for dusting the tops of your skirting board."
How Dryer Sheets Work
Dryer sheets are manufactured with an anti-static coating to prevent clothes from clinging together in the dryer. When wiped across blinds or skirting boards, they absorb static electricity, stopping dust from clinging. Additionally, the fabric softener coating leaves a thin, waxy residue that acts as a protective layer to repel dust.
Step-by-Step Cleaning Method
To keep dust away from blinds and skirting boards, start by vacuuming the skirting boards, then mop them if needed. Use a microfibre cloth to thoroughly dry all surfaces, as moisture can attract dust. Next, run dryer sheets firmly across blinds and skirting boards, and also wipe windowsills and bookcases—areas particularly prone to dust.
The room should remain dust-free for at least a month, depending on air circulation. This method significantly reduces dust buildup on commonly neglected surfaces, leaving rooms feeling fresher with minimal effort.
