Households are being warned to take extra care with their bins as warmer weather creates the perfect conditions for maggots to appear. Rising temperatures speed up the breakdown of food waste, attracting flies that lay eggs in bins, which can quickly turn into infestations.

Why Maggots Appear in Summer

Wheeldon Brothers, a waste management company, said the issue becomes far more common during spring and summer months. James Ward, a waste expert from the company, explained: “As soon as the weather warms up, flies become more active and bins can quickly become a breeding ground if they are not managed properly. It is something we see every year, but a few simple steps can make a big difference.”

The expert offered several suggestions on how to prevent maggots from getting into bins in the first place, as well as how to clear them instantly if they do appear.

Keep Your Bin Sealed

Making sure your bin lid is tightly closed is one of the most effective ways to stop flies from getting in. James said: “If flies cannot access the waste, they cannot lay eggs. It sounds simple, but keeping the lid shut properly is one of the best defences.”

Wrap Food Waste Carefully

Loose food waste is one of the biggest causes of maggots. He advised: “Food waste should always be bagged or wrapped before it goes into the bin. This reduces smells and makes it far less attractive to flies in the first place.”

Clean Your Bin Regularly

A dirty bin provides the perfect environment for maggots to thrive. James said: “Any residue left behind can encourage repeat problems. Giving your bin a regular clean helps remove the conditions maggots need to develop.”

Keep Bins Out of Direct Sunlight

Heat accelerates the process, making infestations more likely. He added: “Warm bins break down waste faster, which attracts flies. Keeping bins in shaded areas can help slow that down.”

The Trick That Kills Maggots Instantly

If maggots do appear, there is a quick way to deal with them, according to the waste specialist. He said: “Pouring boiling water directly onto maggots will kill them almost instantly. It is a simple and effective solution, but you should take care when handling hot water.”
