A simple cleaning hack using lemon juice, costing just 37p, has been shown to remove months of grime from shower heads more effectively than traditional white vinegar. Nicola Roy, a Spare Time writer, tested the method after noticing her shower head was clogged with limescale and dirt, causing water to spray in all directions.
Why Lemon Juice Works Better Than Vinegar
Roy had previously used the common hack of soaking the shower head in a bag of white vinegar, but she disliked the strong smell. Inspired by a tip from the Royal Bathrooms website, she switched to fresh lemon juice. She juiced three lemons into a plastic bag, added warm water, and tied it around the shower head with a scrunchie, ensuring the nozzle was fully submerged.
After soaking for just under two hours, Roy removed the bag and scrubbed any remaining stubborn bits with an old toothbrush. The results were impressive: most of the tough grime vanished, and the water flow returned to normal. The bathroom also smelled fresh and citrusy, a pleasant improvement over vinegar.
Cost-Effective and Gentle Alternative
Roy noted that lemons are a gentler alternative to white vinegar, especially in areas without hard water. She estimated the cost of three lemons at around 37p, making it an affordable solution. While the cleaning power was comparable to vinegar, the pleasant scent and ease of use made it her preferred method.
If the shower head is heavily soiled, Roy recommends leaving it to soak for several hours or overnight. After cleaning, running the water for a minute or two rinses away any residue.
