Patios can be restored to a pristine condition in just five to six hours using a single natural household item: soda crystals. This method, shared by cleaning influencer Nancy Birtwhistle, effectively breaks down algae, moss, and grime without the need for harsh chemicals or pressure washers.
Why Soda Crystals Work for Patio Cleaning
Soda crystals, also known as washing soda, are a strongly alkaline cleaning agent that eliminates greasy residue and organic layers from algae and everyday dirt. According to gardening specialists at STIHL, a mixture of soda crystals and water is ideal for particularly dirty patios. They recommend combining 10g of soda crystals with 1 litre of water, applying it with a broom, and leaving it for five to six hours before rinsing with clean water.
Step-by-Step Method from Nancy Birtwhistle
In an Instagram video on her account @nancy.birtwhistle, Nancy demonstrated her technique for cleaning a natural stone patio, which cannot tolerate acidic or harsh products. She began by dampening the patio with rainwater from a watering can. Then, she scattered several tablespoons of soda crystals across the entire surface. Next, she applied a modest amount of eco-friendly washing-up liquid, which provides mild surfactants to remove greasy marks and helps the soda mixture coat each slab uniformly. However, she noted that the washing-up liquid is not essential for tackling patio stains.
Using a stiff brush, Nancy scrubbed the patio thoroughly, working the mixture into the stone. She cautioned: “Power washing isn't great for natural stone, as it can make it even more porous.” After a good scrub, she did not rinse the mixture but left it on the stone, as rain was forecast. In dry conditions, she advised rinsing the mixture away after a few hours.
Results and Expert Endorsement
When Nancy inspected her patio the following morning, it had been completely transformed and looked “absolutely gorgeous,” with the paving appearing refreshed and practically new. The method is endorsed by STIHL, whose specialists confirm that soda crystals are an effective cleaning agent for heavily soiled patios. They note that the quantity of mixture needed depends on the area being cleaned.
This natural approach avoids the potential damage caused by pressure washers, which can inflict significant harm when not operated properly, and eliminates the need for specialist patio cleaning products. By using items commonly found in the kitchen, homeowners can achieve a clean, safe, and attractive patio with minimal effort and expense.
