A £2.99 Home Bargains patio cleaner can remove green moss and algae stains without scrubbing, according to a TikTok video by @lauramarietaylor. The product, Spear & Jackson Select Path & Patio Cleaner 2.5l, is described as a “powerful outdoor solution” that removes lichen, mould, and algae to “restore your garden paths and patios to their natural beauty with ease”.
How the cleaner works
Laura’s video showed her patio slabs covered in dirt and green moss and algae stains before she applied the solution. After using the product, the patio was left cleaner, and the green stains had fully gone. She captioned the video: “Don’t spend £16 on Monty’s. Get this bargain from Home Bargains.” She also noted that she tried the Monty Miracle patio cleaner, and “it didn’t even shift the green colour/moss”.
The patio cleaning fluid is formulated to rid garden stones, paths, and patios of unwanted stains. The 2.5L of solution makes between 12 and 13 litres of ready-to-use product when diluted with four parts water to one part concentrate. Debris should be removed with a patio brush before applying, and the surface rinsed with a garden hose after use.
Where to buy and alternatives
The Spear & Jackson patio cleaner is also available at B&M for £2.99 and on Amazon at £12.89 for a five-litre bottle. Customers on Amazon said that this is a “good product and does the purpose for which it’s intended very well”, although they pointed out that for stubborn areas, you need more than one spray of the solution to work.
For those looking for a more natural route, Home Bargains sells white vinegar for £1. The patio pros at RF Paving said, “Vinegar is not only a kitchen staple but also a powerful patio cleaner. A balanced mixture of white vinegar and water is both effective at cleaning your patio slabs and eco-friendly. The acetic acid composition in white vinegar makes it especially effective at removing moss from paving slabs.” To use, mix an equal amount of white vinegar and water, though for tougher stains, you can increase the vinegar proportion.
