A ten-year-old boy from Seaham has swum more than 14 miles to raise money for the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS), the charity that helped save his grandfather's life. Elijah Wotton-Lidster completed 924 lengths of a 25-metre pool, covering 14.3 miles in total, after being inspired by a swim marathon at his local pool.
Inspired by Grandfather's Survival
Elijah's grandfather, who suffered a severe head injury and a smashed shoulder when he fell from a ladder onto concrete in 2013, was airlifted to James Cook University Hospital by GNAAS. Although Elijah was not yet born at the time, his grandfather later shared the story to highlight the importance of supporting the charity. Elijah's mother, Gemma Wotton-Lidster, said: "He has spoken to Elijah many times about how GNAAS landed a helicopter in a nearby field, kept him stable, administering life-saving care until he reached hospital, and without them he would not be alive today. Elijah is very close to his grandad and wanted to show his appreciation to GNAAS for saving his life so they could have all their time together."
Exceeding Expectations
Initially, Elijah aimed to swim two miles a week for one month. However, in his first week he swam 241 lengths—112 more than his target. By week two, his motivation remained high, and he swam 266 lengths, equivalent to over four miles. By the end of the challenge, he had completed 924 lengths, totaling 14.3 miles, which is more than halfway across the English Channel. Gemma noted: "He never once felt as though it was too much as he knew what a great cause he was raising money for and had plenty of support from friends and family cheering him on."
Fundraising Success
Elijah originally hoped to raise £200 but more than doubled that amount, collecting £468 for GNAAS. His mother added: "After completing the challenge, Elijah was immensely proud of himself and surprised himself at what he can achieve when he is determined. He was very surprised by the amount he has raised, and extremely grateful to all those who have donated to such an amazing cause."
