GTA 6 to run at 30fps at launch, 60fps option not ruled out
GTA 6 runs at 30fps at launch, 60fps not ruled out

Rockstar has confirmed that Grand Theft Auto 6 will run at 30 frames per second on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S at launch, although a 60fps option has not been ruled out for the future.

The confirmation came during previews following the GTA 6 Extended Look, which showcased 27 minutes of gameplay but offered few specific technical details. Brazilian outlet Flow Games reported that Rob Nelson, Rockstar's head of development, told them the current version of the game runs at 30fps.

60fps option uncertain

According to the report, Nelson said he is unsure whether a 60fps option would be possible in the future. The excerpt from Flow Games, machine-translated from Portuguese, reads: 'According to the director, it is still necessary to consult the technical team to determine if there will be a 60fps option at launch (or in the future).'

'He also emphasises that he does not currently have details on resolution and other technical qualities, such as the use of ray tracing, but the performance, for now, is 30fps.'

Reasonable compromise

While Rockstar does not rule out a 60fps option, 30fps for GTA 6 is considered reasonable given the level of graphical detail and the type of game it is. Many games offer a toggle to prioritise graphics or performance, but for a game like GTA 6, which is not 100% action, 30fps is a perfectly reasonable compromise.

This news is not surprising, as Rockstar's previous game, Red Dead Redemption 2, still does not have a 60fps mode, despite rumours of a patch for current-gen consoles. It remains to be seen if GTA 6 will receive a 60fps mode at launch, or if it might be prioritised for a PC version later.

GTA 6 is set to launch across PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X on November 19, 2026.
