Black tea, a common kitchen staple, can be used to clean wooden floors, restoring their shine and reducing the appearance of scratches, according to experts at Wood Floor Doctor. The natural tannic acid in the tea provides a "brilliant shine" and helps repel dust, offering an affordable alternative to chemical-laden commercial cleaners.
How It Works
The tannic acid in black tea enhances the wood grain and reduces the visibility of scratches, lending floors "clarity and shine." Unlike many commercial products, black tea leaves no sticky residue, making it a highly appealing option for household cleaning.
Experts recommend a patch test in a discreet area before applying the solution to the entire floor, in case the outcome is unsatisfactory.
Application Method
To prepare the cleaning solution, steep approximately six tea bags in just under a litre of boiling water for around 10 minutes. Remove the tea bags and allow the solution to cool completely before use.
Apply the tea using a clean, soft cloth or a spray bottle, then go over damp areas with a dry cloth to absorb the tea. The solution should be applied in sections to allow it to dry thoroughly.
Expert Warning
The experts cautioned against using a mop for this task, stating: "I definitely do not recommend the wet mopping technique. It could be a quick way to wreck your floors." They also advised using a minimal amount of the solution each time.
This black tea solution is intended solely for darkly stained floors. On light-colored floors, it may leave unsightly dark streaks.
