Aldi, the UK's cheapest supermarket, has shared a quick 30-second hack to keep bananas fresh for longer without going brown or mushy. The budget supermarket partnered with food storage specialist Kate Hall to offer advice on preserving everyday staples like milk, potatoes, and bananas.
The Freezing Method
Kate recommends simply peeling, slicing, and freezing bananas to extend their shelf life. She explains: "Let's face it, we can't always make banana bread every time a bunch gets past its best. But if you can spare 30 seconds to peel, slice and freeze bananas, you can avoid them going to waste."
For best results, spread the slices on a lined tray before freezing to prevent clumping, then transfer them to a resealable freezer bag. Frozen bananas are perfect for banana ice cream, smoothies, or chocolate peanut butter bites.
Other Fruits and Veggies
The same technique works for other produce. Cucumbers can be sliced and frozen to replace ice cubes, added to smoothies, or blitzed into a refreshing sorbet. Kate adds: "Using your freezer is such a simple way to press pause on your food so it doesn't end up in the bin."
Reducing Food Waste
The advice follows Aldi research showing the average Brit wastes £387 worth of food annually, with seven in 10 admitting they buy food expecting to throw it away. Luke Emery, National Sustainability Director at Aldi UK, said: "At Aldi, we're committed to reducing food waste wherever we can across our supply chain. Now we're on a mission to help shoppers minimise their food waste too, while getting even more value from their Aldi groceries."
