Adam Frost Urges Gardeners to Grow 'Magical' Herbs to Avoid Supermarket Rip-Off
Adam Frost: Grow Herbs to Avoid Being Ripped Off

Adam Frost has urged gardeners to grow a “magical” type of plant themselves or face getting “ripped off” in the supermarket. The BBC Gardeners’ World star, known for his appearances alongside Monty Don, Frances Tophill, Joe Swift, and Carol Klein, has opened up about his passion for herbs.

Why Herbs Are Special

Speaking on the BBC Gardeners’ World podcast, Frost explained that herbs require little space. “I didn’t need a lot of room. It was something that I could grow, and I loved that idea of eating as well,” he said. He admitted that if he could only grow one thing, it would be herbs, praising their “power” and positive impact on food.

Supermarket Herbs vs. Home-Grown

Frost expressed frustration with supermarket herbs, saying they often consist of a “load of seeds chucked in” and are grown under artificial light for about 15 days, forced with chemicals. He questioned their taste, adding, “If you go and have basil from the garden or basil you've grown yourself, it's a completely different experience.”

Growing Tips from Adam Frost

Frost shared his methods for growing basil, coriander, and parsley. He starts basil in a greenhouse, moving it in and out before committing it to the garden in good summers. Coriander is grown in containers but must be protected from excess heat to prevent bolting. Parsley is treated as a biennial.

Frost’s advice comes as gardeners are urged to take action before Sunday with a simple household item to save their plants.
